I’ve got 2 restaurants to tell you about this week. Can you tell we’re making the most of our last few days of being baby free?!

The Luxe opened in Spitalfields Market about 6 weeks ago. It’s a gorgeous renovation spread across 3 floors. The basement is a dark cocktail dancey bar. The ground floor is also a bar that spills out into the market.

The restaurant is on the first floor. And whilst the decor is amazing, the dining room is an odd L shape around an open kitchen.

If you’re sat down the side of the kitchen, not along the front, it can seem disjointed and quite dark. But to make up for that the food was really very good. I had braised pork cheeks with autumn fruits and red cabbage. And then a really gorgeous baked blueberry cheesecake for pudding. The service was a bit of a let down though. The kitchen lights were turned off at 10.30pm and we were hurried to finish by the waitress literally pulling napkins of our laps, even when there was half a bottle of wine left! The staff seemed a little inexperienced. But it’s early days for this restaurant. And I think it’s got great potential.

So on to The Bear in Camberwell….

We went yesterday for a birthday lunch with about 25 people and 5 babies/toddlers. How the staff managed with us all I don’t know! The food was OK, actually it was better than OK. The portions were enormous, my fish pie could have fed about 3 people! The do a Saturday roast dinner that lots of people had and rather than bring out separate plates they served big platters of meat, potatoes and veges and everyone was helping themselves. The apple and plum crumbles that came out for pudding were also in big dishes to be shared. It was a nice way to eat with a big group.

There aren’t many nice pubs in Camberwell, and even less in Peckham. I think the Bear is a really welcome addition to the area. Well worth a visit.
