Let me start off by saying I have never made a cake like this in my life! My cakes are homemade, and in all their glory they look homemade. This one however looks shop bought. WOW!

Let me finish by saying I could never have made it without the help of my sister, Amy. Without her the icing would have been rubbish, the lines wonky and the finish terrible. Thanks girl.

BTW Harper loved his drum cake!

It’s been a while since I’ve baked anything from the Hummingbird bakery book. This is their signature cake and it is F A N T A S T I C. It’s full of bananas, juicy pineapple pieces and nuts, and I’m ashamed to say I pretty much ate the whole thing myself bar a couple of slices! Recipe from here.

This isn’t too sweet, it’s like a plain new york cheesecake with fruit on top. Easy and delicious. Recipe from Donna Hay.

To quote Nigella… ‘I love lemons, I love almond, so this for me is cake nirvana.’

I didn’t have enough ground almonds so made up the difference with flaked almonds which I think made it even better. Yum yum. Recipe from here.

Oh the pressure… Of baking your son’s first birthday cake! In all honesty I wasn’t happy with the first chocolate sponge I baked so had to re make it the night before the party. It was almost a disaster but we managed to pull it back with my husband and I icing into the wee small hours. It was all worth it though. I can’t tell you how proud I was to sit with Harper on my knee whilst all our friends sang Happy Birthday.

How can it be that I’ve not made any baby cakes yet for Harper? These are my first batch… sugar free muffins. I think it’s safe to say he loves cake as much as his mum. The recipe is from a really great Baby-Led Weaning cookbook.

My baking has slowed down considerably these past few months but now that the days are colder and the nights draw in, I find myself wanting great big slabs of crumbly cake. This upside-down cake hit the spot. I’m never going to lose my baby weight at this rate!

Only one thing better than having a homemade cake to pull out of the oven, and that’s having 2 cakes to pull out of the oven! This recipe from Bill Granger makes enough for 2 loaves. One to eat now and one to freeze in slices. Perfect.

It’s always lovely when someone bakes you a cake… But it’s even better when they bake you your birthday cake! My good friend Stephen made me this fabulous coffee and ginger cake a few weeks ago. He’s an amazing cook and has always wanted to be on cake of the week. With pleasure babe! Thank you x
